Motiti Island is located off the Bay of Plenty coast of New Zealand's North Island. It is north-east of Tauranga and north-east of Papamoa. There were 18 homes occupied by 27 people on the island in the 2006 Census.〔(QuickStats About Motiti Island ), 2006 Census, Statistics New Zealand. In his journal he refers to it as the “Flat Island”.〔http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/1966/motiti-island〕 On 9 October 2011, the 45' launch M/V ''Excalibur'' ran aground offshore in bad weather. The crew of six was rescued, but the ship was considered a total loss.〔http://www.cargolaw.com/presentations_casualties.php〕 In 2011 the MV ''Rena'' ran aground on Astrolabe Reef.
